Saturday April 30th
Woke early (8 am) to sunny skies, but still breezy. Walked 4 circuits of the Promenade Deck (3 circuits = 1 mile), and headed for the breakfast buffet. Joined a French Canadian couple at their table - Dianne spoke very little English, but she and I managed a conversation - she's an artist, lives near Montreal, a very pleasant person. It was her second cruise and she was enjoying it very much, but had an inside cabin, and said she never knew what the weather was until she got to the upper decks.
Ber and I attended a wine tasting early in the afternoon, informative and interesting, followed by a nap! My calf muscles were badly knotted, but walked the stairs to loosen them up. We had received a gift card from Iris, giving us a free dinner in the Pinnacle Grill - the over-the-top luxury dining room - Louis and Tina, our Italian tablemates, also had a gift card, so we reserved a table for four and met at the Grille. We were shocked to see Louis arrive in a wheelchair - apparently he had taken a bad turn and was not well, but he said he was not missing his dinner in the Grille! It was a gift from their son, and as he said, after you've spent your life working two jobs to give your son a good education, when the son offers a gift, you take it! The food and service in the Grille put the regular dining room to shame - lots of flambeing and other flourishes accompanied the really good food - I had salmon, asparagus and creme brulee. Sadly, Louis was unable to swallow, but insisted on tasting each of the courses he'd ordered. We thought privately that he had suffered a mini-stroke, and Tina suggested a number of times that they go back to their cabin to call a nurse. His reply: "You only go this way once, and I'm going to enjoy this dinner!" Finally, after tasting his baked Alaska dessert, he agreed to be wheeled back to their cabin. Strangely, even with his obvious distress, we had a very nice dinner and enjoyed their company.
We wandered down to the lounge to listen to the string quartet, and had an early night.
